Girl group NewJeans was named Group of the Year at the 2024 Billboard Women In Music Awards, becoming the first K-pop group to win in the category.
NewJeans was honored alongside renowned female artists who won in different categories, such as American singer Maren Morris, American rapper Ice Spice and British singer-songwriter Charli XCX.
The Billboard Women In Music Awards started in 2007 to recognize women who have made significant contributions to the music industry. The annual event presents awards to the best female artists, creators, producers and executives of the year.
The group was the only K-pop artist to be named as an honoree this year.
NewJeans is set to attend the ceremony which will take place at the YouTube Theater in Los Angeles on March 6.
NewJeans debuted in July 2022 under agency ADOR, a music label under HYBE, and has been one of the biggest names in K-pop since then. The group is responsible for major hits like “Attention” (2022), “Ditto” (2022) and “Hype Boy” (2022) among others.
The group recently matched the record set by girl group Blackpink for the longest-charting album on the Billboard 200 album chart by a K-pop girl group with its second EP “Get Up.” The album has been on the chart for 26 consecutive weeks.
The group previously performed at the Billboard Music Awards held in November last year, becoming the first K-pop girl group to perform during the ceremony, according to its agency ADOR. It also won the Top Global K-pop Artist at the ceremony.
