South Korean power equipment manufacturer LS Electric Co. has signed an agreement with GE Vernova to strengthen ties in the high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission sector, with hopes to expand its presence at home and abroad.

LS Electric signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday for global cooperation in voltage source converter (VSC) HVDC with GE Vernova at LS Yongsan Tower in central Seoul.

GE Vernova, a global energy company involved in power, wind, and electrification businesses, is planning to spin off from General Electric Co.

The agreement outlines plans for both companies to actively utilize LS Electric’s infrastructure, including the high-voltage transformer production facility in Busan, to supply customers worldwide with necessary products in a timely manner.

The collaboration also aims to leverage GE Vernova’s technological expertise and recognition to enhance LS Electric’s presence in the domestic HVDC market.

HVDC technology involves converting alternating current (AC) power produced in power plants into high-voltage direct current for transmission. It is then converted back into AC power at the receiving end, facilitating efficient long-distance and high-capacity power transmission.

Particularly, VSC HVDC, as opposed to the traditional current source converter (CSC) HVDC, offers advantages in the operation and stabilization of power systems. It has gained prominence in large-scale renewable energy complexes, especially in Europe and the United States, according to LS Electric.
