Samsung Electronics Co. described its latest Galaxy 24 as the earliest stage of generative artificial intelligence (AI) smartphones.

“We will have our own devices that understand our needs moving forward,” Kim Young-jip, vice president of the Language AI Team at Samsung Electronics’ MX Division, said during a press briefing held at Samsung Research America in Silicon Valley, the United States, on Thursday.

“Our team added Live Translate and Photo Editing as new AI-powered tools to the device because we wanted to offer a seamless tech experience to our customers,” Kim added.

Samsung Electronics said that the Live translation works by using Gauss AI, a large language model (LLM) created by Samsung Electronics. The feature enables on-device translation services even in places without internet access.

The Galaxy AI boasts other generative AI tools based on Google’s LLM, Gemini, including on-device photo editing features that suggest suitable tweaks for each photo.

But when asked about whether the AI tools in the Galaxy 24 series would be offered for free until 2025, Kim said that nothing has been officially decided.
