SK Group chief to attend MWC in February to explore AI strategies

South Korea’s SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won will attend the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024, the world’s largest telecommunications trade show taking place in February in Barcelona, Spain, in a move to seek strategies to enhance AI competitiveness.

According to industry sources on Sunday, Chey will directly oversee the AI business during the MWC 2024, which will be held from February 26 to 29. He is expected to identify global industry trends and seek new business opportunities alongside SK telecom Co. Chief Executive Officer Ryu Young-sang.

This year marks Chey’s second visit to the MWC after last year. He is expected to reinforce AI business initiatives by observing the changes and developments in artificial intelligence (AI) across the global mobile sector.

Last year, Chey also attended the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, to discuss economic cooperation with foreign leaders and dedicate efforts to promoting Korea’s bid to host the 2030 World Expo in Busan. This year, he will only attend the MWC.

At the MWC, Chey is expected to meet with CEOs of SK telecom’s major partner companies and discuss AI cooperation. In particular, there will be a meeting with representatives from Deutsche Telekom AG. The German telecom company has announced plans to form a Global Telco AI Alliance with SK telecom and others to develop an AI personal assistant service covering about 1.2 billion people across 45 countries.

Chey has been actively involved in overseeing the AI business. Earlier this month, Chey visited the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024, the world’s largest tech exhibition, held in Las Vegas, the United States.
