Latvia commemorates anniversary of the 1991 Barricades in Riga

epa11091585 Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics (C), Prime Minister Evika Silina and Riga Mayor Vilnis Kirsis (R) stand around bonfire during an event to commemorate the 1991 Barricades at Doma Square in Riga, Latvia, 20 January 2024. The Barricades were a series of confrontations between the Republic of Latvia and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in January 1991. The events are named for the popular effort of building and protecting barricades from 13 January until about 27 January. In January 1991 people flowed into the capitals of the Baltic states and erected makeshift barricades around strategic locations like the parliament and the national radio station to protect them against Soviet troops that wanted to crush the Baltic nations' independence drive. As every year, in January everyone in Riga is invited to attend various events to commemorate the people who lost their lives fighting for independence. EPA/TOMS KALNINS
