'Great Gatsby' musical heads to Broadway

OD Company's musical production of "The Great Gatsby" is set to open on Broadway in April, with Jeremy Jordan and Eva Noblezada reprising their starring roles from the production's previous run at the Paper Mill Playhouse.

Korean musical producer OD Company's ambitious production of “The Great Gatsby” will open on Broadway in April.

The musical will play at the Broadway Theater; previews begin on March 29, and the official opening is scheduled for April 25.

OD Company, founded in 2001 and headed by lead producer Shin Chun-soo, is one of the three major musical production companies in Korea.

It has staged dozens of local musicals, including the original “Assassin” (2009) and “Titanic” (2007), and licensed productions “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” (1979), “Dracula, the Musical” (2001) and “Jekyll & Hyde” (1990).

Shin has been part of Broadway production teams in the past, having worked on the musicals “Doctor Zhivago” and “Holler if Ya Hear Me,” neither of which were particularly successful.

“The Great Gatsby” is based on the 1925 novel of the same title by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald, which follows mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby's efforts to court a former lover.

Actor Jeremy Jordan will play the titular role of Jay Gatsby, and Eva Noblezada will portray Gatsby's affluent lover, Daisy Buchanan. Both actors are reprising roles that they played during the musical's previous run at the Paper Mill Playhouse.

The show will be directed by Marc Bruni. It features a book by Kait Kerrigan and a score by Nathan Tysen and Jason Howland, which mixes 1920s jazz with modern pop.

The musical first premiered at the regional Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, New Jersey.
