Suitcase sales surge on rising travel demand in Korea

Sales of suitcase are on a rise in South Korea, fueled by an increase in the number of travelers during the school winter break and Lunar New Year holiday.

According to Lotte Group’s online shopping platform, Lotte On, on Tuesday, suitcase sales during the first two weeks of this year were double the sales during the same period the previous year.

In particular, there has been a growing number of customers purchasing large-size suitcases of 24 inches and above, in contrast to previous years when they sought carry-on sizes, according to Lotte On.

Sales of travel accessories, such as suitcase covers and organizing cubes, also saw double-digit growth.

Lotte On plans to organize a special promotion until later this month, offering up to a 30 percent discount on 14 types of suitcases from various suitcase brands. The event will also showcase travel bags categorized by size and introduce travel accessories.

SSG.com Corp., run by Shinsegae Group, is also hosting a travel week event until Sunday, featuring hotel and flight packages.

They will unveil four daily deals showcasing premium hotels both domestically and internationally, such as the Mohegan Inspire resort on Yeongjong Island, Incheon, and Shilla Monogram Quangnam Danang, Vietnam, offering a 12 percent discount along with cash-equivalent points.

A discount of up to 50,000 won is offered for domestic accommodation products from the accommodation platform Yanolja and overseas stay products from Expedia.

On Friday at 6 p.m., special air ticket offers will be unveiled as part of the event.

SSG.com said that it plans to change the travel week promotional event to a quarterly basis from the previous monthly basis and to expand the benefits offered.
