Millions of plastic pellets wash up on shore in Cantabria

Millions of pellets washed up in Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia originated from at least one container that fell from the Toconao, a Liberia-registered vessel chartered by shipping giant Maersk, off the coast of Portugal last month, as stated by the pellets? manufacturer Bedeko Europe. Last 13 December 2023, the NGO 'Noia Limpa' informed about the arrival of damaged bags filled with pellets to the Galician coasts. According to the NGO, the bags where marked with the name of the company 'Bedeko Europe' which meant it would probably be lost shipment from a boat. Since then, NGO's as well as private and public cleaning services are working to clear beaches from these pellets, a difficult task due to the size of them. EPA/PEDRO PUENTE HOYOS
