The television market is set for a significant shift with the introduction of transparent screens, moving away from the previous focus on resolution, slim design, and screen size.

On Sunday (local time) in Las Vegas, two days before the opening of CES 2024, the world’s largest consumer electronics and information technology (IT) exhibition, leading global TV makers Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc. both unveiled transparent TVs.

Samsung Electronics held a “First Look” event that day to reveal the world’s first TV with a transparent micro light-emitting diode (LED) display. The transparent panel was created by securing tiny vacant spaces between micro-LED components that are about one hundredth the size of a LED. The company also highlighted the new panel’s exceptional clarity, which it said is twice the level of an OLED panel. The price is expected to be similar to existing Micro LED TVs.

LG Electronics also introduced the world’s first wireless, transparent organic light-emitting diode (OLED) TV on the same day. The LG Signature OLED T allows viewers to see through the screen like transparent glass when the power is off, providing not only a sense of openness but harmony with their houses’ interior design as well. All visible cables have also been eliminated, except for the power cord, thus eliminating the constraints on installation locations. The TV offers two screen modes, transparent and black, providing users with options according to their preferences.
