The South Korean military has announced plans to upgrade the surveillance system along the front line facing North Korea by integrating artificial intelligence (AI).

The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) announced on Tuesday the development of a science-based border security system featuring AI image analysis, thermal imaging and short-wave infrared capabilities.

According to DAPA, the AI image analysis component allows for detailed object recognition within the surveillance system, enabling distinctions between a person and wildlife.

Thermal imaging and short-wave infrared technology ensure the surveillance system remains operational regardless of weather conditions.

General outposts (GOP) along the frontline with North Korea will be the first to receive the enhanced surveillance system.

The system will be progressively extended to other frontline units.

The DAPA initiated the project last year and signed an official contract with the security company, S-1.

The military expects to improve the working environment of South Korean soldiers by minimizing false alarms.

Moreover, the system is expected to bolster national security by strengthening detection capabilities along the border.
