The President of Ecuador decrees a state of emergency after riots in six prisons

The President of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, decreed this 08 January a state of exception, the first since he began his mandate on 23 November 2023, after a series of riots in at least six prisons in the country, which involved the capture of prison guards and the burning of mattresses. The prison incidents this 08 January coincided with the search for Jose Adolfo Macias, alias 'Fito', leader of a gang known as 'Los Choneros', considered one of the most dangerous in the country, with alleged links to Mexican cartels and who apparently escaped from a prison in the province of Guayas.
