The Seoul Metropolitan Government aims for 2024 to be the “Year of Great Transformation,” with the goal of shaping Seoul into a happier city, said Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon during the city government’s New Year’s meeting on Friday.
“With South Korea ranking 57th in the 2023 World Happiness Report, Seoul’s ultimate goal for 2024 is to ensure citizens’ happiness,” said Oh. “For policies that guarantee citizens’ happiness to be realized, Seoul must shape itself into a city that attracts people, capital and job opportunities, and increase its competitiveness.”
On the topic of city competitiveness, Oh stated that areas within Seoul and its waterfront will be reformed to begin transforming Seoul into a “fun city,” with attractions for everyone to enjoy all year round. He also added that the city government will actively invest in creative industries using information technology -- such as media and gaming -- to boost Seoul’s economy and create job opportunities.
Mayor Oh mentioned that the city will continue to enforce and strengthen its policies to empower social minorities.
“Centering on areas like livelihood, living conditions, education and health, the city of Seoul will continue to enforce its policies that were previously introduced for social minorities and expand on them to solidify its support for those who need it,” Oh said.
Additionally, Oh went on to say that safety will be considered as another priority for its citizens.
“To counter social crimes that may arise, more AI-backed surveillance cameras will be installed to prevent crime and personal safety devices will be further distributed to those who need it,” said Oh. “The city government will also work to eradicate accidents that may occur due to poor construction through its new safety measures designed to prevent substandard building practices.”
