A memorial to Chilean President Salvador Allende, overthrown 50 years ago by a coup d'etat, was inaugurated this 29 December at the Santa Ines Cemetery in the coastal city of Viña del Mar, 110 kilometers from Santiago. There, he was secretly buried after taking his own life while the coup plotters attacked the presidential palace of La Moneda. His remains remained in this cemetery until the return to democracy, in 1990, when they were transferred to the General Cemetery of Santiago. EPA/Adriana Thomasa
