The National Institute for International Education (Niied) will be hosting a year-end ceremony for Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) recipients on Thursday, recognizing outstanding students and universities.

Around 200 GKS scholars, university staff and embassy officials will be attending the event, which will take place at Niied's office in Seongnam, Gyeonggi.

GKS is a government-funded scholarship that provides full tuition to international students applying for undergraduate and graduate students.

There are 1,000 undergraduate and 4,014 graduate students receiving the GKS funding in 2023.

The education minister will give three students with outstanding academic achievements awards during the event.

"My motto is that 'the only thing that keeps you from achieving your goal is not putting in enough effort,'" Khadka Ashwin, one of the three students who will win an award, said.

The Korea University student from Nepal added, "I worked hard based on such beliefs, and it is an honor to receive an award from the minister of education."

Konkuk University, Korea University, Pusan National University and Jeonbuk National University's offices of international affairs will also receive awards for being outstanding host universities.

"We hope to celebrate GKS scholars' achievements through the event, also wishing they successfully conclude the remainder of their time studying in Korea," Ryoo Hyea-sook, Niied's president.
