KT upgrades intelligent R&D network to 1Tbps

South Korean telecommunications provider KT Corp. announced Tuesday that it upgraded the backbone network of the Korea Advanced Research Network (KOREN) to 1 terabit per second (Tbps) and will provide services to organizations using KOREN from the new year onwards.

KOREN is a non-profit testbed network infrastructure operated by the National Information Society Agency (NIA) that enables research, testing, and verification of future network leading-edge technologies and related equipment.

With the upgrade, the bandwidth capacity will be expanded by up to 10 times compared to the previous range of 100 to 400 gigabit per second (Gbps), according to KT.

The construction of a 1Tbps backbone network is the first of its kind in Korea, and KT has been upgrading the KOREN backbone network since 2020.
