Many South Koreans have trouble sleeping on Monday nights, an analysis showed Wednesday.

According to a report released by Korean sleep tech company Asleep Inc., containing an analysis of sleep records of its sleep solution users this year, the average sleep duration on Monday nights was about five hours and 32 minutes, nearly 30 minutes less than six hours on Sunday nights.

The company provides Sleep Routine, an app that uses artificial intelligence (AI) models to monitor sleep stages and breathing instability.

“Sleep efficiency and awakenings were also worse on Mondays compared to Sundays,” the company said. “Sleep quality was the worst on Mondays compared to other days of the week.”

There were also notable differences between weekdays and weekends.

The average weekday sleep duration was six hours and 11 minutes, more than an hour less than the weekend sleep duration of seven hours and 15 minutes.

“Prolonged rapid eye movement (REM) sleep deprivation can lead to cognitive dysfunction and may contribute to increased mortality in middle-aged and elderly people,” said Jung Ki-young, a professor at Seoul National University Hospital.
