Samsung Display Co. is releasing quantum dot organic light-emitting diode (QD-OLED) panels with a resolution of 3840 × 2160 ultra-high definition (UHD), according to the company’s announcement on Wednesday.

Samsung Display officially began mass producing the 31.5-inch QD-OLED panel with UHD resolution this month.

The latest offering has the highest level of pixel density among self-illuminating monitors and incorporates UHD resolution. It also has the inherent features of self-illuminating displays, including fast response times.

When developing the UHD monitor, Samsung Display applied precision inkjet printing technology to the QD luminescent layer. By optimizing the inkjet nozzles and spray volume, the company increased the pixel density to 140 pixels per inch (PPI), equivalent to levels on the recent 65-inch 8K TVs.

Currently, self-illuminating monitors in the 30-inch-range typically have quad high-definition (QHD) resolution, measuring 2560 x 1440 pixels. The company expects consumers who enjoy gaming or high-quality videos to prefer its new UHD products.

Samsung Display has also unveiled a 27-inch QHD QD-OLED with a 360-hertz (Hz) refresh rate as the first self-illuminating monitor to implement this feature. The refresh rate is the number of times the screen can be refreshed in one second, and higher refresh rates result in smoother video transitions. The highest refresh rate for existing self-illuminating monitors is 240Hz.

The display panel maker plans to collaborate with global clients and introduce high-resolution, high-refresh-rate new products from early 2024 while aiming to double the shipment volume of QD-OLED monitors throughout the year via various product lineups and by securing new customers.
