Soviet Army monument dismantling in Sofia

After years of public controversy and strong resistance from a considerable part of Bulgarian society, the authorities began dismantling of the Russian Army Monument in the heart of Sofia, formally due to the poor condition of the bronze sculptures that threaten security, although attempts to dismantle it intensified after Russia's aggression against Ukraine. All elements of the installation will be stored for later restoration and then transferred to the Museum of Socialist Art, the regional governor of Sofia Viara Todeva announced. The monument, erected in 1954, is the second largest in Bulgaria and was built in honor of the USSR that occupied the country in September 1944 and installed the communist regime until 1989.
