South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. announced Wednesday the application of a sound and vibration dampening material made of graphene to a mission ship for the first time in the world.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries said it has collaborated with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co., Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and BN Chemical Co., a specialized ship painting company, for the development and application of the material.

The innovation has showcased exceptional effects in reducing vibrations and minimizing noise within ship compartments, according to the company.

The dampening material is designed to diminish the noise and vibrations generated by engines, propellers, and other machinery aboard ships.

It is strategically installed in areas where crew members reside, such as cabins and engine rooms, to significantly minimize noise levels.

Graphene is characterized by its outstanding conductivity, remarkable strength, and elasticity. When applied to dampening materials, graphene exhibits exceptional properties by efficiently converting vibrational energy into thermal energy and releasing it outward.
