'Better recycling, rather than mining' protest against EU pro-mining law project in Bucharest

epa11001307 Activists from the Declic community gather in front of the Ministry of Economy to protest against a European legislative project that would allow mining in protected natural areas and could legalize forced relocation of the people living in potential mining areas, in Bucharest, Romania, 29 November 2023. The EU Regulation on Critical Raw Materials, which is under debate, will allow the rapid extraction of these raw materials, without regard for protected natural areas or the will of local people. Protesters also brought a huge pile of discarded electronics to the ministry, to show the alternative to be implemented instead of mining, because by recycling household electrical equipment in an organized manner, valuable materials can be recovered without digging for them. The yellow banner reads: 'Do Not Destroy Nature! No To Surface Mining In Europe!.' EPA/ROBERT GHEMENT
