CJ CheilJedang announced on Monday that it has developed a biodegradable paper coating technology by using the eco-friendly bio-material PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate).

The achievement marks the world’s first application of PHA for creating compostable coatings that enable microwave cooking. CJ CheilJedang highlighted its adaptability to the paper packaging on various products, including paper cups, cup noodles, and rice containers.

PHA is a biopolymer that microorganisms accumulate by consuming plant-derived components, known for its decomposition properties in most environments, including soil and oceans. Only a handful of companies in the world, including CJ CheilJedang, can mass produce PHA.

The new technology developed by CJ CheilJedang enhances durability and heat resistance compared to conventional compostable paper coatings. It exhibits qualities akin to petroleum-based coatings such as PP (polypropylene) and PE (polyethylene), ensuring it does not break easily and is suitable for heat-based cooking methods.

This new coating is applicable not only to paper cups but also to packaging for instant noodles and composite rice containers for microwave cooking.

Its ability to decompose in home composting environments also suggests packaging materials can have a high sustainability potential, the company said.

CJ CheilJedang aims to implement this technology starting with the paper containers for Hetbahn, an instant rice product that can be heated in the microwave, in the first half of 2024 before expanding its use to diverse paper-based food packaging afterwards.
