SK hynix narrows gap with Samsung Electronics in DRAM market

SK hynix Inc. has managed to narrow the gap with Samsung Electronics Co., the global leader in the DRAM market, thanks to the growth in high bandwidth memory (HBM) for artificial intelligence (AI) applications.

According to market research firm Omdia on Sunday, SK hynix’s DRAM revenue came to $4.63 billion in the third quarter following $3.44 billion in the second quarter.

In the first quarter, SK hynix slipped to third place behind Micron Technology Inc. but it reclaimed the second position in the second quarter with a market share of 31 percent, up 6.3 percentage points from the previous quarter.

SK hynix managed to raise its market share further by 4 percentage points in the third quarter to reach an all-time high of 35 percent.

Samsung Electronics, on the other hand, saw a slight decline from 40 percent in the second quarter to 39.4 percent in the third quarter.

The dip is interpreted as a move undertaken for business improvement through production cuts.

Samsung Electronics has been steadily increasing the sales proportion of HBM3 while introducing next-generation ultra-high-performance HBM3E DRAM Shinebolt, capable of processing up to 1.2 terabytes (TB) of data per second.
