Farmers in northern Panama affected by mining crisis

Thousands of small producers are affected by road blockades disrupting Panama's economy amid nationwide protests against a controversial contract between the government and Minera Panama, a subsidiary of the Canadian company First Quantum Mineral, to continue to operate the Cobre Panama mine, considered the largest open-pit copper mine in Central America. The green and temperate region of Tierras Altas, located in the province of Chiriqui and bordering Costa Rica, is the main producer of vegetables, legumes, and coffee in Panama.
