Installation artist Haegue Yang has been named one of the world's top 100 artists this year on the Kunstkompass, according to German business magazine Capital on Thursday.
The Kunstkompass is an annual ranking that recognizes notable contemporary artists, which is announced through Capital. The ranking is based on how many solo or group exhibitions the artist has had in major art museums and participation in international cultural events like the Venice Biennale.
Yang ranked 93, the same as last year. In 2021, she ranked 99.
Three other Asian artists made the ranking: Chinese artist Ai Weiwei and Japanese artists Yoko Ono and Hiroshi Sugimoto.
The No. 1 spot went to Gerhard Richter, a German visual artist known for his photorealistic paintings and photography.
Yang, who is based in Berlin and Seoul, is known for utilizing materials like tiny bells and hanji, or traditional Korean paper, to create sculptures that allude to Korean shamanism. Her installations made of Venetian blinds, which shot the 51-year-old artist to global fame, explore the ambiguity and complexity of the world.
Yang has held exhibitions at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the 53rd Venice Biennale and the 2006 São Paulo Art Biennial.
