KT Skylife Co., a South Korean provider of digital satellite broadcasting services, announced Thursday that it has developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-based speech-to-text (STT) service, a speech recognition technology that converts speech into text, along with a content editing program, and launch them within this year.

To this end, KT Skylife has signed a business agreement with Megazone Cloud Corp. and ActionPower Corp. to develop an AI-based media platform. The three companies will collaborate on automatic video tagging and management using AI, building a cloud storage platform based on Amazon Web Services (AWS), and improving content workflows.

KT Skylife completed patent registration for a voice recognition database building system using digital content in 2018.

The company plans to expand its business by combining ActionPower’s AI technology know-how with Megazone Cloud’s media infrastructure to launch an AI previewer service and use it for content storage and editing.

In particular, the media specific STT engine newly developed by KT Skylife with the support of ActionPower’s technology has improved performance by up to more than 30 percent compared to existing competitor engines in all areas such as news, drama, entertainment, and YouTube.

“We will expand our capabilities to new media platforms by developing new services that incorporate AI technology into our existing broadcast data transfer business,” KT Skylife chief executive officer Yang Chun-sik said. “This is a new business that we have high hopes for, as the production and transmission of content will continue despite changes in media usage behavior.”
