Hyundai Mobis Co., the auto parts maker under South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Group, is reviewing the productivity of its employees working from home. Now that the Covid-19 pandemic has come to an end, the company appears to have decided to review the efficiency of its current working format from various angles. This is the first time Hyundai Mobis has undertaken performance management for telecommuting, and it remains to be seen whether the move will lead to the complete end of the benefit at the company.

According to industry sources on Wednesday, some departments at Hyundai assessed the heads of their organizations earlier in November 2023 to determine the division of duties and performance of their employees with a high proportion of working from home or working in the base office. A base office refers to a space set aside for employees to work near their homes rather than in a traditional office. With this assessment centered on the heads of organizations, speculation arose that it may be a step toward ending telecommuting.

“The purpose of this assessment is to monitor whether our hybrid work system, such as telecommuting or working in a base office, is taking root effectively at the organizational level,” an official from the company said. “The assessment aims to identify the current situation and implement the current work format more efficiently.”

The productivity and efficiency of telecommuting is a topic of intense debate in the industry but according to Hyundai Mobis, the proportion of hybrid work arrangements is gradually declining.

Hyundai Transys Inc., an auto parts unit, was the first in Hyundai Motor Group to officially end telecommuting in late August 2023.
