Bedbug pesticide sales jumped 813 percent in the past week compared to last year for G Market, a major ecommerce operator, as panic over the pests gains traction through social media.

SNS를 통해 빈대에 대한 공포가 확산하면서 G마켓의 지난주 빈대 살충제 매출이 전년에 비해 813% 급증했다.

Sales for bedding cleaners rose 610 percent, waterproof covers for beds and mattresses to prevent bedbugs rose 111 percent, and even sales for high temperature steamers rose 25 percent, according to sales records from G Market on Tuesday. For ecommerce operator 11st, sales for pesticides including insect repellents and insect screens each rose 109 percent for the same period.

지난 화요일(11월 7일 기준) G마켓의 침구 청소기 매출은 610% 늘었고, 빈대 차단용 침대·매트리스 방수커버는 111%, 고열 스팀기 매출도 25% 늘었다고 한다. 11번가에서도 같은 기간 살충제와 방충제, 방충망 거래액이 각각 109% 증가했다.

A post titled “Discovered one bedbug on my trench coat” was updated onto an online community site on Tuesday. “[After coming from outdoors] I took off my clothes and put it on the desk … and there was a bug on my trench coat. I caught it with a tissue and when I pressed on it, blood came out … it was really the infamous bedbug,” the post stated.

7일 한 온라인 커뮤니티에는 ‘트렌치코트에서 빈대 1마리 발견’이라는 제목의 글이 올라왔다. 이 게시물은 “(외출 후) 옷을 벗어 책상 위에 두고 양치하고 왔는데 벌레 한 마리가 트렌치코트에 있었다. 휴지로 잡아서 꾹 눌렀더니 피가 나왔다. 요즘 말 많은 빈대인가 했더니 진짜였다.”고 썼다.

But there is no actual confirmation that bedbugs have been spreading through trains or delivery services. An insider at a distribution company said the rumors about bedbugs are “groundless,” adding that “preventive measures are already in place. There are no plans to conduct additional preventive measures because of bedbugs.”

하지만 실제 빈대가 열차나 배송 서비스를 통해 퍼지고 있는지는 확인된 바 없다. 한 유통업체 관계자는 빈대 소문과 관련해 “사실 무근이라며 “방역은 원래도 하고 있었다. 아직 빈대 때문에 특별히 추가 방역을 한다는 계획은 없다”고 말했다.
