Lawyer protest against Supreme Court of Turkey in Istanbul

epa10974407 Lawyers hold a banner reading 'Independent and impartial judiciary' and shout slogans during a protest against the Supreme Court of Turkey's decision regarding jailed lawmaker Can Atalay, in front of the Istanbul Courthouse in Istanbul, Turkey, 14 November 2023. On 08 November, the Turkish Supreme Court announced that it would file criminal charges against members of the Constitutional Court, which had earlier this year opted to free Can Atalay, a member of parliament for the Workers' Party of Turkey (TIP). Atalay was sentenced to eighteen years in prison in 2022 as part of the Gezi Park trial. Atalay ran for office in the jail and was elected as a member of the parliament at the parliamentary elections in May 2023. Then, making use of his immunity from prosecution as a parliamentarian, he appealed to the Supreme Court for his release. Atalay's request was denied by the court. When the Turkish Constitutional Court ruled last month that the Supreme Court had violated the politician Atalay's rights, he had to be released. EPA/ERDEM SAHIN
