South Korea’s convenience store chain CU announced on Tuesday that it is launching a new series of its private label brand “Deuktem,” which features products that are popular among foreign customers.

The first product to be reorganized under the Deuktem brand is seaweed snacks. CU explained that the seaweed content was increased compared to the existing products for a crispy texture as well as a rich and savory flavor.

Laver chips will also be introduced as a Deuktem product. CU plans to sell these products in its stores in Mongolia and Malaysia as well, starting in early 2024.

The Deuktem tasty chestnut snack will also be introduced as a ‘cost-effective’ product that costs 35 percent less than similar existing products with the same weight. This is made possible by directly importing the product from overseas suppliers, eliminating the intermediate distribution process, CU explained.

“We planned the Deuktem series to offer snacks that are explosively popular among foreign tourists at a more reasonable price,” a CU official said.

Snacks utilizing seaweed or seaweed-related ingredients in processed foods have recently gained significant popularity among foreign customers at convenience stores in Korea.

According to CU, an analysis of overseas payment method sales from September 28 to October 31 showed that products like laver chips and seaweed snacks were among the top sellers during that period.
