Lee Geum-min scored a late winner to lift Brighton to a shock 1-0 win over Manchester City in the Women’s Super League on Sunday.
Lee, a former Manchester City player herself, combined with another former City player Pauline Bremer to beat Khiara Keating at the far post in the 81st minute, handing Brighton a win on the road and City their second consecutive loss in the early days of the season.
The goal came at the end of what had looked like it ought to be a very one-sided game in City’s favor, the hosts hammering 35 shots in the general direction of the goal but failing to get a single one past Brighton’s Sophie Baggaley.
Brighton, meanwhile, had managed just a couple of shots on target before Lee made one count.
Now six games into the season, Brighton’s fortunes appear to be turning around. The south coast club lost three of their four opening games, but then held Manchester United to an unexpected draw last week before going on to beat City this week.
The goal on Sunday was Lee’s first of the campaign this season. The Korean forward has played all six games to date, but has largely been kept quiet in front of goal.
Brighton will be back in action on Wednesday as they take on West Ham in the FA Women’s League Cup, before returning to the Super League on Sunday to face Liverpool on the road at Prenton Park in Birkenhead, north England.
