(Issued 09 November 2023) Japan has one of the highest proportions of elderly citizens in the world. In June 2023, data from the government Statistics Bureau show that 29.1 percent of the population was aged 65 and older. This is already resulting in an increasing demand for healthcare services, long-term care facilities and a need for products adapted to the elderly population care and daily life. Since 2015 and with financial aid from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, Tokyo-based nursing home operator Silver Wing Social Welfare Corp is actively promoting the introduction of caregiving robots to improve the quality of life of the some 30 elderly people service users and 70 caregiving staff members. Once a month, Shintomi hosts a monthly free children's abacus class with the aim of introducing children from the digital generation to the ancient practice of using the abacus for improving their concentration, and providing interaction with elderly and communication robots. Initially, a dozen participants registered but nearly 30 children have been attending Shin-Tomi's abacus classes. EPA/FRANCK ROBICHON ATTENTION: This Image is part of a PHOTO SET
