South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. is gearing up to enter the generative artificial intelligence (AI) market with its upcoming smartphone, the Galaxy S24. The device, set to be released in early 2024, will feature a self-developed generative AI model named Samsung Gauss. This feature, inspired by mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss, consists of language, coding, and image models.

The AI model was unveiled at the Samsung AI Forum 2023 on Wednesday.

The language model facilitates tasks such as document summarization and translation, available both on-device and on cloud platforms. The Gauss code model aims to simplify software development, while the image model allows creative image generation, supporting features such as transforming existing images and enhancing resolution.

The tech giant also plans to extend generative AI technology to various products beyond smartphones, including laptops and home appliances. The move is part of the company’s strategy to meet consumer demand and compete with global AI giants including Google and Apple Inc.

The generative AI market is experiencing explosive growth, with S&P Global Market Intelligence projecting it to hit $36.4 billion by 2028, a nearly tenfold increase from $3.7 billion this year. As companies like Samsung Electronics, OpenAI, and Apple race to enhance their AI capabilities, the competition is expected to drive further technological advancements.
