Samsung Electronics Co. launched a new 50-million-pixel image sensor after a two-year gap, aiming to take the top position in the image sensor market currently held by Sony Group Corp.

According to industry sources on Monday, the South Korean electronics giant recently introduced a new smartphone image sensor, ISOCELL GNK, to its GN series. This comes 26 months after the release of GN5 in September 2021.

An image sensor is a semiconductor system that reads light energy and converts it into electrical energy, effectively acting as the film role in traditional cameras.

Samsung’s GN series also adjusted pixel sizes to match their intended purpose as the series progressed through various generations up to GN5. The latest product has improved internal specifications based on the first version, GN1.

The latest GNK is expected to be included in global product lines scheduled for release in 2024, including Google LLC’s upcoming smartphone, the Pixel 8 Pro.
