Afghan children take classess in open air due to lack of facilities

epa10959240 Afghan children take classess in open air due to lack of facilities at Mangal Elementary School in Mohmand district, Jalalabad province, Afghanistan, 04 November 2023 (issued 05 November 2023). The Mangal Elementary School has 415 boys and 348 girls taking classes under challenging conditions. Parents have voiced their concerns about the persistent shortcomings in the education sector, highlighting that their children have been studying on the hard, damp ground for years, under the harsh sun or beneath sparse trees. The school's director revealed that this situation has persisted for approximately 13 years, with students enduring their lessons without access to educational facilities and in need of a proper shelter. The condition of the school, which has been neglected by both the previous and current government due to ongoing conflicts and warfare, has not improved despite numerous appeals to the Department of Education. Now that a relative peace has been established, the community is urging the government to address the educational problems, including the lack of school infrastructure and teaching materials.
