The most significant feature of the short-form videos on Danggeun Story is their focus on local neighborhood businesses, as users can share these short videos with people from the same community. Danggeun stressed that while current short-form video services are not bound by geography, Danggeun Story specifically targets residents who are seeking information about local businesses.
Danggeun Story is accessible through the Danggeun app’s “Near Me” feature, currently available for Android smartphones, with an iOS version expected to be released in mid-November 2023. The service is launching initially in the Gangnam, Seocho, and Songpa districts in Seoul, and plans for expansion to other areas are in progress.
Recent trends in Korea’s major platforms indicate an aggressive expansion of short-form video services. According to data from mobile app analytics service Wiseapp Retail Goods, Android and iOS smartphone users in in the country spent an average of 46 hours and 29 minutes per month on platforms including YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram as of August 2023. This usage time far exceeded the 9 hours and 14 minutes spent on online video streaming services such as Netflix in an over fivefold difference.
The launch of Danggeun Story reflects the growing popularity of short-form video content and the potential for these platforms to play a significant role in connecting local communities and businesses. As users continue to engage with such content, the expansion of Danggeun’s service and similar offerings is expected to increase.
