Hirokazu Kore-eda's 'Monster' to premiere in Korea on Nov. 29

The film was screened at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival and won Best Screenplay. It was also screened during this year’s Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), the tickets for which sold out within 2 minutes.

Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda’s new film “Monster” will premiere in Korea on Nov. 29.

The film was screened at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival and won Best Screenplay. It was also screened during this year’s Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), the tickets for which sold out within 2 minutes.

The upcoming film centers around the story of Minato, the son of a single mother, Saori, who finds her son’s behavior unusual. She goes to his school to find answers but only discovers that something is odd between the teacher and the students. The narrative shifts among different points of view, leading viewers to mull who the real monster is.

“This film is about what adults need to do for the children of our society," Kore-eda said during a press conference for "Monster" at the KNN Theater in Busan during BIFF on Oct. 7.

The renowned Japanese director is known for films including “Nobody Knows” (2004), “Still Walking” (2008), “Like Father, Like Son” (2013) and “After the Storm” (2016). His latest film was the Korean film “Broker” (2022), starring actor Song Kang-ho from "Parasite" (2019).

"Monster" also has the last works of the late maestro Ryuichi Sakamoto, who participated in the film’s soundtracks.
