LG Uplus completes construction of large-scale data center in Anyang

LG Uplus Corp. has completed the construction of a new large-scale data center in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province, which will serve to meet the growing demand for servers amid expansion in artificial intelligence (AI) utilization and cloud transition.

According to the company on Thursday, LG Uplus has built Pyeongchon 2 Center, an internet data center (IDC), in Anyang. The 9-storey new data center has three underground floors and covers a total area of 40,450 square meters. It is capable of accommodating over 200,000 servers.

The new data center is the telecom company’s second large-scale data center, following the first one built in 2015.

Pyeongchon 2 Center will address the increasing demand for data centers from corporate customers, particularly in response to the transition to the cloud and the utilization of hyperscale AI.

“The essential elements that determine the quality of an IDC are temperature control, security, and uninterrupted power supply,” said an unnamed official from the company. “We’ve enhanced these three factors by analyzing our customers‘ needs from the design stage.”

LG Uplus implemented its own cooling technology in the data center, involving the installation of fans in the upper part of the data center and increasing the volume of cooling air to efficiently manage internal heat.

The data center’s eco-friendly design, incorporating a new cooling system and utilizing renewable energy, can save 121 gigawatt-hours of electricity, equivalent to the annual consumption of approximately 100,000 people.

It also offers a 100 percent uninterrupted computing environment, ensured by its Tier 4 level power and cooling equipment redundancy.
