SK telecom announced on Monday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with South Korean autonomous driving startup Mars Auto, with the goal of advancing self-driving technology for heavy-duty trucks.

The duo will collaborate in the “middle-mile” segment of logistics, collecting driving data and employing artificial intelligence analysis to develop highly advanced and reliable autonomous driving technology.

Leveraging its expertise in 5G mobile communication, AI, and autonomous driving, SK telecom will provide knowledge and share its technology to help Mars Auto secure a leading position in the self-driving cargo truck market.

Heavy-duty trucks, in contrast to passenger vehicles, present unique challenges due to their size and significantly longer braking distances, requiring real-time communication for precise information exchange, situational assessment, and prediction during autonomous driving scenarios.

“We will continue our collaboration and lead the innovation of customer experiences utilizing AI in the autonomous driving ecosystem,” Jeong Seok-geun, head of global AI tech business at SK telecom, said.
