South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries Co. announced Monday that it will receive an Approval in Principle (AiP) for its smart fault diagnosis system from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) at a marine exhibition this week.

The AiP will be given at the 23rd International Marine, Shipbuilding, Offshore, Oil & Gas Exhibition (KORMARINE 2023) scheduled between Tuesday and Friday at BEXCO in Busan, Korea.

SVESSEL CBM, Samsung Heavy Industries’ condition-based smart fault diagnosis system, is a smart solution that enables real-time fault diagnosis and maintenance prediction by remotely analyzing vibration and current signals of major ship equipment using Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

The system is currently being applied to liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers built by Samsung Heavy Industries.

Samsung Heavy Industries will hold a technical seminar on SVESSEL CBM on Wednesday when it receives the AIP certification. It will present cases of fault diagnosis and the direction for the development of data-based maintenance systems and build a network between the industry, academia, and research institutes.

“The latest technology certification recognizes the reliability and competitiveness of Samsung Heavy Industries’ smart fault diagnosis technology,” said Kim Hyun-jo, head of the Autonomous Navigation Research Center at Samsung Heavy Industries. “We will further develop our participatory smart maintenance platform.”
