Winter shelter preparations for sculptures of Summer Garden of the Russian Museum

epaselect epa10923717 Municipal workers cover a sculpture with pieces of clothes and wooden cases as part of the measures to protect it during winter at the Summer Garden in St. Petersburg, Russia, 17 October 2023. The tradition of hiding the sculptures of the Summer Garden for the winter period began in the 18th century, during the reign of Anna Ioannovna ? then the statues were wrapped in canvas. But the canvas got wet and froze, so in the 20s of the 19th century, wooden cases were used, which much more reliably preserved the sculptures. After the reconstruction of the garden, the collection of sculptures of the Summer Garden, with the exception of the 'Nishtadsky World', was replaced by copies of polymer marble. The original marble sculptures that decorated the Summer Garden for 300 years have been set up in the Mikhailovsky Castle since 2011 in order to ensure their safety and where they can be seen on permanent display.
