South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) announced on Tuesday that it will collaborate with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) on joint research focused on AI-based drug, food, and narcotics safety assessments.

Their cooperation aims to enhance regulatory scientific capabilities in various fields such as food, pharmaceuticals, and narcotics, with MFDS and KAIST formalizing this commitment by signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to foster research cooperation.

Under the MOU, the ministry and the KAIST will work together on research related to organoids (organ-like structures) and the platform development of messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) vaccines and therapeutics, as well as collaborating on national research and development projects and educational programs.

MFDS Minister Oh Yu-Kyoung expressed her optimism about the collaboration, saying that “by joining forces in research, MFDS and the KAIST can enhance public safety significantly.”

KAIST President Lee Kwang-hyung underscored the institution’s commitment to leveraging its advanced scientific research capabilities to further elevate regulatory science expertise in cooperation with the ministry.
