Concerns grow as AI-led deep fake news spreads

Artificial intelligence (AI)-generated news involving fake content is becoming more prevalent around the world, raising concerns about the negative effects of technology development.

In a recent video, a newscaster in his 40s named Alex criticized the U.S. government, saying that there are more than 600 gun-related incidents in the country annually in which up to 40,000 Americans have been killed.

The figures quoted by Alex, part of Wolf News, are not false. However, it was clear that the intent was to convey a message that the United States is an underdeveloped country in terms of human rights that is unable to control guns.

The U.S. government immediately launched an investigation into the criticism.

According to research firm Graphika, the unidentified Wolf News was created using generative AI and is shown to be operating for the benefits of the Chinese Communist Party.

AI-driven deep fake news is evolving, as deep fake news blurs the boundaries between reality and fiction. With specific groups able to use generative AI to create images and videos easily, they can then create fake anchors or images.

But these groups also convey some realistic information and resemble something that exists, and experts note that distinguishing and penalizing them is difficult.

Nina Schick, the author of “Deep Fakes,” warned that problems could escalate if platform companies do not take further action against the false information.
