SK hynix Inc. will become a global hub for semiconductor manufacturing with its ongoing cluster project in Yong-in City, Kwak No-jung, the South Korean chipmaker’s chief executive officer, said on Tuesday.

His remarks suggested the company aims to build a supply network of three production bases spanning the cities of Cheongju, Ichon, and Yong-in.

“SK hynix will strive to improve business efficiency by bringing the optimal systems to the production bases when the first plant in the Yong-in Cluster begins commercial operation in 2027,” Kwak said in a special interview held as part of the in-house event to commemorate the company’s 40th anniversary.

He also vowed to develop the company’s memory chips, often considered a multi-use product, into a specialty product that will primarily be used by artificial intelligence (AI) companies.

With the commercial launch of HBM3E scheduled for next year, SK hynix will expand its collaboration with AI firms for chip design in the early stages of future projects, which is expected to bring huge changes to the industrial landscape as well as design and manufacturing practices, according to Kwak.
