The city of Namyangju in North Gyeonggi Province on Wednesday called on the state-run Korea Land & Housing Corp (LH) to provide measures to address citywide traffic issues and improve access to the city.

The details were discussed in a meeting held between Mayor Joo Kwang-deok and LH Chief Executive Officer Lee Han-jun on Monday.

Joo was said to have called for stronger measures to help enhance the city’s traffic management, including undergrounding of National Route 46, the construction of Suseok Bridge, swift implementation of Seoul Subway Line 9’s extension project, and other initiatives aimed at tackling the city’s chronic traffic congestion.

The mayor particularly stressed the potential impacts of the Seoul Subway Line 9 extension project on the city’s new town, Jingeon Town, which is expected to serve as an industrial hub of innovative technology.

In response, Lee reportedly said, “We will engage in proactive consultations with relevant authorities, such as the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, and Gyeonggi-do, to address the city’s needs.”

Namyangju’s city-planning project was supposed to build 8,000 residential houses in the towns of Jingwan and Baeyang, spanning 917,000 square meters. The project, however, has long been suspended due to several factors, including traffic congestion, which forced the city to change it into a public housing project in 2021.
