LS Cable, LS Marine to install submarine cables for Korean wind farm

LS Cable & System and LS Marine Solution will provide submarine cables for South Korea’s largest offshore wind farm, in a synergetic collaboration within the renewable energy sector. The contract, valued at several hundred billion won, comes after LS Cable acquired submarine cable installation firm LS Marine Solution in August 2023, and is the duo’s first joint project since the acquisition.

LS Cable said on Monday that the company and LS Marine Solution were selected as preferred bidders for the submarine cable contract in the Anma Offshore Wind Power Project. The project aims to establish a massive 532 MW offshore wind farm near Anma Island, Yeonggwang County, South Jeolla Province. It is the largest of its kind among ongoing offshore wind projects in Korea.

The collaboration between LS Cable and LS Marine Solution involves the development of high-capacity submarine cables for the external network connecting the wind farm to the mainland. The cables play a crucial role in transmitting the electricity generated at the wind farm to onshore substations, and the total length of the submarine cables to be installed will span several kilometers.

“LS Cable is the sole company in Korea capable of supplying high-capacity submarine cables, and our experience in such projects is a significant factor. While specific contract details cannot be disclosed, the contract value is estimated to be in the range of several hundred billion won,” an LS Cable spokesperson said.

LS Cable previously secured exclusive contracts for submarine cables in eight projects under the first phase of the Taiwan Offshore Wind Farm Construction Project. These contracts, spanning from 2019 to 2023, amount to a total value of 1 trillion won ($747 million).
