epaselect epa10880656 Military protection equippment seized and received during the disarmament of Nagorno-Karabakh forces is displayed under asign reading 'Karabakh- Azerbaijan!' at an Azerbaijani forces' held position in Shusha, in the Azerbaijan-controlled region of Nagorno-Karabakh, late 23 September 2023 (issued 24 September 2023). On 19 September 2023, Azerbaijan broke a ceasefire agreement from a decades-old conflict by launching a brief military offensive on the contested region of Nagorno-Karabakh, a breakaway enclave internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan that is home to some 120,000 ethnic Armenians. A new ceasefire was agreed upon in Nagorno-Karabakh on 20 September 2023, after a 24-hour military offensive. The armed forces of Nagorno-Karabakh began to surrender weapons and military equipment under the control of Russian peacekeepers. According to the military department of Azerbaijan, as part of the agreements reached on the cessation of hostilities, six units of armored vehicles, more than 800 units of small arms and anti-tank weapons and about 5,000 ammunition have already been handed over. An assistant to Azerbaijani leader Hikmet Hajiyev said that Nagorno-Karabakh military personnel who voluntarily lay down their arms during Azerbaijan's 'anti-terrorist operation' are free.
