Tensions between Moldova and Russia grow over disputed debt to Gazprom

Moldova is facing an energy crisis due to a disagreement between Moldova and Russia over gas supplies by Russian oil and gas company Gazprom and debt repayment by Moldova. On 06 September 2023, Moldova's Minister of Energy Parlicov addressed the government's plans to protect gas consumers following an audit of historical debts allegedly owed to Moldova-Gaz, a Gazprom subsidiary in Moldova, based on which Moldovan authorities are disputing debt claims made by Moldovagaz. Furthermore, at the beginning of 2024, Ukraine may terminate the transit of Russian gas, which could affect the gas supply of Transnistria, a breakaway region of Moldova, adding to the former Soviet country's fraught energy supply situation.
