KT will collaborate with Canada-based AI lab Vector Institute to develop its large language model, Mi:dm.

The two sides met in KT Institute of Convergence Technology in Seocho District, southern Seoul, on Tuesday as part of the partnership they formed last September.

They are collaborating to develop an AI technology called prompt engineering — the crafting of text or queries given to a language model or AI system to elicit accurate responses.

The telecom carrier is studying ways to utilize AI technologies, including prompt engineering, in its services.

Mi:dm is scheduled for release sometime this year.

Vector Institute is a global AI research institute based in Ontario, Canada, co-founded by Geoffrey Hinton, the godfather of AI deep learning technology. Hinton is the institute’s chief scientific advisor.

Vector Institute CEO Tony Gaffney will participate as a guest speaker to discuss AI at the Mobile 360 Asia Pacific conference in Jung District, central Seoul, from Thursday to Friday. This year’s event is sponsored by KT and organized by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association.

"Vector is proud of to work with sponsors like KT who focus on building models that represent all cultures, and we commend KT for continued development of AI services for the Korean market," Gaffney said in a statement. "Vector Institute is a world-leading AI institute committed to responsibly advancing the application, adoption and commercialization of AI. Our partnership with KT will no doubt deliver meaningful results in the AI sector."

Bae Soon-min, the head of KT’s AI2XL Research Center, promised to strengthen the competitiveness of Mi:dm through the partnership.
