South Korea’s POSCO Group plans to relocate the headquarters of its U.S. entity to Washington D.C. from Atlanta, a move seen to bolster relations with U.S. government and Congress officials and enhance its role in securing new investment sources in North America.

According to multiple sources from the conglomerate circle on Tuesday, Do Han-eui, representative president of POSCO America Corp. and other staff will begin work at an office in Washington as early as this week.

POSCO has a local office within a building owned by the Korea International Trade Association in Washington and construction is under way for expansion.

The office in Washington, which currently has three to four employees, will be joined by staff from Atlanta. The number of staff is expected to increase to up to 20. One or two employees from the POSCO headquarters in Seoul will also be dispatched.

The relocation is the first of its kind in 7 years since the entity moved to Atlanta from New Jersey in 2016. At the time, the relocation was aimed at boosting local sales support for automotive steel after Hyundai Motor Co., its major client, established a production base in Georgia.

POSCO’s decision to move its office to Washington serves the purpose of enhancing its channels of communication with the U.S. government and Congress. POSCO is hoping to closely monitor pertinent legislative developments, particularly as it ramps up investments in North America, according to sources.
