China urges Japan to stop releasing treated radioactive water into ocean

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said his country 'firmly opposes and strongly condemns' Japan's release of the Fukushima nuclear-contaminated water into the ocean despite the strong criticism and opposition from the international community, adding that Beijing 'made serious demarches to Japan and asked it to stop this wrongdoing'. On 24 August in the early afternoon, plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc. (TEPCO) started the discharge of treated radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean despite opposition of local fishermen and some neighboring countries.
